Manchester United defender Harry Maguire says he is “absolutely gutted”
to miss out on Euro 2024 with England.
The centre-back has been a stalwart for his country, and produced some outstanding form in previous major tournaments.
He had hoped to recover from the calf problem that forced him onto the sidelines since the draw with Burnley in April, and ensured his absence from the Emirates FA Cup final victory against Manchester City.
However, despite linking up with Gareth Southgate's provisional squad ahead of the finals in Germany, Maguire has failed to prove his fitness in time.
“I am devastated not to have been selected to play for England at the Euros this summer,”
he posted on social media.
“Despite my best efforts, I have not been able to overcome an injury to my calf. Maybe I pushed myself too hard, to try and make it. Simply, I am absolutely gutted.
”For me, representing England is the highest honour. It means everything to me. If I can’t help the team as a player, I will support them as a fan – along with the rest of the country. Go and win it boys.
“Next, I will return to the supervision of the Manchester United medical team in order to prepare for next season.”
Everybody at United obviously wishes Harry good luck with his recovery during our close season.
The England squad for the finals has now been confirmed, with better news for Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo.
Both Reds have made the cut and are set to represent the Three Lions in Germany.
