International Reds: Semi-final success

Denmark and Turkey both booked their place in World Cup qualification finals on Thursday, with five Reds named in international squads across the evening.

Rasmus Hojlund, currently on loan from United with Italian side Napoli, led the line for the Danes in their assured 4-0 win over North Macedonia, meaning only Czech Republic stand in their way of a World Cup place.

Arsenal's Christian Norgaard and Brentford's Mikkel Damsgaard were both on the scoresheet, with the other two both netted by Lazio winger Gustav Isaksen.

The result will have been watched keenly by Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu, who wasn't in the squad as he continues his rehabilitation from an injury sustained in January, but will hope to be fit should his nation make it to this summer's tournament.

An update on Dorgu's rehabilitation

Turkey tasted similar fortune in their semi-final game against Romania, with Altay Bayindir handed a watching brief from the bench as his nation recorded a slender 1-0 victory over Romania.

Brighton & Hove Albion full-back Ferdi Kadioglu scored the game's only goal, latching on to a pinpoint long-range pass from Real Madrid man Arda Guler.

It sets up a one-game shootout with Kosovo next Tuesday, with a place in this year's World Cup on the line.

Elsewhere, Academy winger James Scanlon, currently on loan with Swindon Town, played the full 90 minutes for Gibraltar's senior side in their UEFA Nations League C qualification final against Latvia.

It was, unfortunately, a 1-0 loss for Scanlon's side, a penalty for the visitors at the Europa Point Stadium their only undoing, but they have a chance to put that right next week in a second-leg trip to Riga.

We also had representatives in friendly action across the Atlantic at the Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts, where Brazil faced France.

Casemiro captained Carlo Ancelotti's side, with Matheus Cunha starting alongside Vinicius Jr in attack, but the Selecao were defeated by Les Bleus' 10-men – Kylian Mbappe and Hugo Ekitike netting the goals in their 2-1 win, with Dayot Upamecano dismissed just before the hour mark.

Casemiro played 84 minutes in the loss to France.
