Shaw lined up for return

Luke Shaw could return from illness in Manchester United's Champions League round-of-16 second leg against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.

Ralf Rangnick has explained to club media that, while the left-back is set to miss the visit of Tottenham in the Premier League this evening (17:30 GMT kick-off), it is hoped he may be available for the crunch clash against the Spanish champions at Old Trafford.

Shaw played in the first leg at the Wanda Metropolitano before coming off the bench in the 74th minute of the 0-0 draw with Watford.

However, the England international then tested positive for Covid-19, along with Raphael Varane, with both defenders absent for the Manchester derby last weekend.

Although Varane returned to training earlier in the week, Shaw was still affected by the virus after displaying symptoms and will not make the matchday squad for the Spurs encounter.

Yet he has since registered a negative result and may be in the frame for a starting spot against Diego Simeone's men.

“Luke [Shaw] will still be out, until yesterday [Thursday], he was still testing positive [for Covid] even though he was negative today,“ revealed Rangnick in his interview with MUTV's Stewart Gardner.

“Without having trained and having some symptoms, it doesn’t make sense to have him in the squad for this game. Hopefully, he will be a candidate for Tuesday but, for Saturday’s game, he will be out.”

Scott McTominay also looks set to miss out against Spurs, although strikers Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani could both be back to pep up our attack.

“There’s also a question mark behind Scott McTominay,” added the boss. “He had some calf problems after training yesterday [Thursday] and the day before yesterday, so we didn’t let him train.

”Currently, I don’t want to take the risk in playing him with this kind of injury so those two will probably be out.

“[But] Edi was training last week and Cristiano had his first training session yesterday and he will be training today [Friday]. They both, after yesterday’s training session, told us that they have no problems anymore, so they both should be available for the game.”
