'This is the best squad I've been involved in'

Luke Shaw believes the group assembled by Ruben Amorim at Manchester United is one of the best he has ever worked within.

Shaw, who is now our longest serving player having joined back in 2014, is gearing up for a positive season at Old Trafford after suffering multiple setbacks in 2024/25.

The England international played 80 minutes in our season opener against Arsenal last week, starting in a back three alongside Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt.

Luke feels fit and ready after a big summer in the US, having sat down with club media this week to reflect on a difficult period both mentally and physically.

Shaw: How I'm feeling nowvideo

“I feel really good and also really happy,”
began Shaw this week at Carrington. “I think obviously, especially after last year, it was a really tough year, not just physically, but mentally as well.

”It was really tough but I am now in a really good place now. I [am trying to] put that behind me and just focus on the things I need to do now.

“And for me that's to stay fit and keep on the pitch. Like I said, I feel really happy and I'm really enjoying the role that the manager has me doing at the moment. So long may that continue.”

Amorim has reshaped United's attack across the summer months, with new signings Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko all arriving at the club.

Luke is impressed by the impact our new additions have brought, especially one in particular, given his infectious personality in the dressing room.

“I've said it a lot to be honest and I've been here a long while now,”
responded Luke when asked about the Reds current group of players.

“I have been in a lot of different squads, but for me personally, I can only speak on my opinion. I think this is the best squad I've been involved in.

”It's not just on the pitch but also off the pitch. I think the environment's extremely important on what we create and [also] the atmosphere around the place.

“It's a really happy place at the moment and credit to the new signings as well. They've definitely brought a lot of joy and happiness and of course for Matheus [Cunha], loudness in the squad.

”But, you know we welcome it with open arms and we're really happy with how things are in, like we call it, an environment, and at the moment it's good.“

WILL SESKO START ON SUNDAY?

PLAY UNITED PREDICTIONS

After suffering disappointment against the Gunners, Shaw is looking forward to a positive season for Ruben's side, especially with so much football still to come.

Next up is Sunday's trip to Fulham and the Three Lions international believes he is well equipped to achieve his own personal targets, as well as ones that are based on United's collective performances too.

“I normally have different targets I set, but I think this season for me, of course going on the back of last season, how disappointing it was and the amount I played,” added Luke.

“I think the most important thing for me this season is to be fit for as many games as I possibly can for the team. [I want to] help the team out as much as I can. I think last year it hurt me quite a lot because I didn't feel like I managed to do that last season.

”It was tough to take. So I think I set targets really this season to be available as much as I can and to help the team I think that's a starting target and I think there'll be more and more targets I set myself - especially for what we want to achieve as a team.

“But I think the main one for me at the moment is just to stay fit and give the manager options and to play me.”
