Manchester United booked their place in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup thanks to late goals from Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial against Everton.
The Reds' 2-0 victory at Goodison Park in the last eight sets up a showdown with holders Manchester City in the next round, in what will be a repeat fixture at the exact same stage of the competition as last season.
Making an assertive start to the match, United put the Toffees under great pressure in the opening 45 and created numerous good chances, but the hosts managed to weather the storm and head in at the break level.
In the second period, the game was a more tense affair and as both sides endeavoured to find a winner, the prospect of penalties loomed large – that was until Cavani cut in from the right flank and unleashed a left-footed shot into the net from the edge of the area, two minutes before the end of normal time.
United’s position was strengthened further when Carlo Ancelotti’s side left themselves exposed high up the field, allowing Martial to finish them off on the counter in stoppage time.
