Report: Crystal Palace 1 United 2

Manchester United responded to losing our unbeaten run by returning to winning ways, becoming the first club to win at Selhurst Park since February.

The Reds won at Crystal Palace for the first time since 2020, coming from behind to extend an undefeated record on the road, which now stretches to four matches.

The Eagles - on their best top-flight home run since 1990 - were undone by a remarkable second-half recovery, started by Joshua Zirkzee.

His first league goal this season transformed the game, with Mason Mount’s free-kick winner inflicting rare home misery on Palace, who had gone ahead in the first half through a Jean-Philippe Mateta penalty.
Joshua Zirkzee sparked a brilliant recovery.

FIRST HALF - BIG MOMENTS AND RE-TAKE DRAMA

With no goals registered against Palace in our last four meetings, a fast start in the early kick-off in the capital was required - and it was delivered.

Casemiro nearly created a little piece of history. Just 43 seconds in, the midfielder was a toenail away from scoring after Diogo Dalot’s long throw caused mayhem. No Premier League goal this season would have been scored earlier in the day, but the Brazilian was just unable to connect.

Casemiro, who earned a free-kick after Daichi Kamada’s poor challenge, then got a jump on Marc Guehi from Bruno Fernandes’s centre. His leap didn’t quite get the accuracy he wanted.

While the early kick-offs often miss spark in the opening stages, the chances and tackles were flowing.

Adam Wharton stung Senne Lammens’s fingertips before Mateta wasted the hosts’ best moment 15 minutes in, after an unlucky Leny Yoro inadvertently played in the French forward.

Yoro came to the rescue five minutes later, a brave block denying Yeremy Pino, who picked up the loose ball, chested it down and struck a powerful volley towards goal. But the United defender’s day was about to take another twist.

Wharton rolled in Mateta who made his move into the box. Needing to stop the striker, Yoro went from behind. Mateta fell to the ground, before picking himself up to roll the ball into the net from 12 yards.

But United had a stay of execution. Replays showed a slight double touch and referee Rob Jones announced the re-take. The unperturbed Palace player won the mind games with Lammens, this time opting for the bottom left-hand corner.

With United exposed in first-half stoppage time after Matthijs de Ligt’s uncharacteristic slip, Shaw prevented what seemed a certain second. Eddie Nketiah sprinted through only for the defender to turn on the gas, swiping the ball from under him as he pulled the trigger.
The United fans were given a reason - or two - to celebrate after half-time.
SECOND HALF - UNITED’S STYLISH RESPONSE

Behind at the break maybe, but United usually score away from home. Only at Manchester City have we failed to register on our travels so far this season and 10 minutes into the second half Ruben’s Reds were at it again on the road.

It was Zirkzee who came up with the goods. The Dutchman managed to beat Dean Henderson from the tightest of angles with players on the line, swivelling before firing low into the far corner.

He almost had the ball in the net again soon after, but at the wrong end. Substitute Noussair Mazraoui crashed his clearance off his team-mate, with both breathing a sigh of relief when the ball went just beyond the post.

The next goal wasn’t far away and it was the United fans celebrating again, their extra early start suddenly certainly worth it.
It was great to see Zirkzee on target at Selhurst Park.
After Fernandes’s little tap from the well-worked free-kick, Mount knew exactly what he wanted to do.

The Palace wall played along, breaking at the just right moment and the ball found the corner, sparking wild scenes in the away end as our supporters sensed an end to the unfortunate run at Selhurst Park.

Palace, so good at home and without defeat in south London in almost 10 months, were being contained, unable to find the thrust from the first half when they deservedly went in ahead.

Bodies on the line, the full-time celebrations told you all you needed to know.
Mount's goal proved decisive in earning victory.
