Cunha: Why I joined United

Matheus Cunha says his move to Manchester United is a lifetime in the making, as he turned down offers from elsewhere to make “a dream come true” when joining the Reds.

The Brazil forward arrives from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a five-year deal, and reports suggested his stellar Premier League record — including 29 goals over the last two seasons — had drawn significant interest from other clubs, as well as United.

Given our disappointing season in 2024/25, that meant Cunha’s choicedrew surprise from some rival fans, but Matheus himself says it was an easy decision, because joining the club has always been his goal.

“It is the most common phrase that you can say at this moment, but this is the dream come true,” he said in his signing interview, available to watch now.

“Maybe outside, I think maybe my decision, they don’t understand. But when you have always dreamed to play here, it’s easier to pick this decision.

“For me, no-one else is like United. Of course, I know it’s been a hard season for everyone. I think my decision shows what this club is for me, and what I believe this club can be.”

So, you may be wondering where that love comes from, for a Brazilian who grew up in the mid-size Brazilian beach city of Joao Pessoa.

Well, Cunha explains to Danny Webber in our interview that it stretches right back to there, and his childhood.

“It is hard to find a way to explain this club for me,” he says.

“My house didn’t have the channel to watch the Premier League. My cousin’s house didn’t have the channel. He’s older than me and he supports United and he showed me the way, to start to watch the Premier League and to need to support United.

“Only in my grandma’s house, we can watch the Premier League, so we organised to go every weekend.

“And for me, it was always a bit inside of me, this club. When I play with him in the street, on the beach, on the gravel pitch, we called these pitches ‘Old Trafford’. Imagine!

“So, wow, it’s so hard to be here now, thinking about the past — it’s very emotional for me.”

Cunha signs for United

United fans will hope Matheus can bring that pride and emotion at representing our club to the Old Trafford pitch throughout next season and beyond.
