Carrick records 10th win this season

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick recorded his 10th win of the season in our 3-2 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Our former midfielder – who played 464 games for the club as a player – took the role of leading the side until the end of the season back in January, and has presided over an incredible run of games since then.

It looked a formidable task for the 44-year-old when first returning to the club, facing Manchester City as his first opponent, before travelling to face Arsenal a week later – both having been first and second in the league for a large portion of the season.

Carrick nevertheless made a splash, beating our crosstown rivals at the Theatre of Dreams with two unanswered goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu.

It was more than beginner's luck, too, as that same pair, plus Matheus Cunha, scribbled their name on the scoresheet once more at Emirates Stadium, with Dorgu's a particularly memorable crossbar-rattler that Sunday in north London.

That wasn't all, as Carrick won his first four consecutive league games, also taking in wins against Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur back in M16.

In fact, Carras emerged from his first seven games in the Reds dugout unbeaten, with a draw against West Ham United sandwiched between those first four, and subsequent wins against Everton – in the men's first Hill Dickinson Stadium outing – and at home to Crystal Palace.

What makes Carrick's achievement all the more impressive is the quality of opposition he's overcome, having now defeated all four teams that currently join us in the top five.

Aston Villa, now in fifth place, did put up a fight when they visited Old Trafford in March, levelling Casemiro's opener in the second half through Ross Barkley, but Cunha soon restored our lead, before Benjamin Sesko notched the winner.

Sunday's win against Liverpool completed the collection and again showed resilience, as our early 2-0 lead was pegged back by the Merseysiders in the second half, before Kobbie Mainoo defiantly slotted home the winner in front of the Stretford End.

That was the latest in our current three-game winning streak – which includes two wins against fellow European challengers Chelsea and Brentford – and sealed our spot in next season's UEFA Champions League.
