Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has congratulated Reds fan Rory McIlroy on his triumph at The Masters – and invited him back to Old Trafford to celebrate!
McIlroy held off the challenge of Justin Rose in a dramatic play-off at Augusta National on Sunday to claim the fabled green jacket for the first time.
The Masters title had been the one Major eluding the Northern Irishman, after previous successes in the US Open, PGA Championship and the Open Championship between 2011 and 2014.
Rory is only the sixth golfer – and first European – to complete the ‘Grand Slam’ and he has been receiving accliam from across the sporting world.
Amorim sent a message from Carrington, which you can watch below…
“Hi Rory,”
begins Ruben.
“Congratulations for The Masters and I want to invite you to Old Trafford to show your trophy.
“It is really important to us in this moment. You achieved something that a lot of people thought would be impossible and we want that feeling in our stadium.
“So, I hope to see you soon at Old Trafford and to meet you.”
McIlroy, 35, has paraded a trophy at the Theatre of Dreams before.
He posed with the ‘Claret Jug’ – awarded for winning The Open – before a home game against Swansea City in August 2014, and we’re already looking forward to seeing the sporting superstar back here again.
He’ll have to fit it into his busy schedule though: Rory is back in action next week, at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans, while he’ll be aiming for a second straight Major when the PGA Championship gets under way at Quail Hollow Club, North Carolina on 15 May.
