Pearson excited by 'tremendous' Legends team

There will be a new face in the dugout when Manchester United Legends take on their Southampton counterparts at the weekend.

The 15:00 GMT kick-off at St Mary's marks 50 years since the two clubs met in the 1976 FA Cup final, won by the Saints through a late goal from Bobby Stokes.

Stuart Pearson was in the United team that day, and again a year later, when he scored in the famous 2-1 triumph over Treble-chasing Liverpool in the same competition.

'Pancho', as he was known to the Red Army, is on coaching duties, alongside another ex-United striker in Andy Ritchie, and it promises to be a special occasion, with tickets still available.

The chance to work with names such as Wes Brown, Antonio Valencia, Louis Saha and Dimitar Berbatov appeals to Pearson, who is still connected to the club via the matchday hospitality experiences for supporters at Old Trafford.

“It's the first one I've been involved in, assisting Andy Ritchie, which is fantastic,” Pearson told us. “He was a great player and my boot boy, when I was here. So I am really looking forward to it. I've never met half of the lads, so it will be nice to meet them and have a chat.

”There's no such thing as a friendly, so I think we are going to enjoy it.

“I'm looking at that team and it looks fantastic. To be fair, we have got a tremendous team, by the looks of it.

”I know the Manchester United Foundation do a fantastic job ad long may it continue, as I think most of the ex-players love doing things like this.“

While it was Southampton's day at Wembley in 1976, it was particularly sweet for United to overcome Liverpool in the following season, and Pearson continued his love affair with the FA Cup after leaving Old Trafford.

In the 1980 final, West Ham United, the last Second Division side to lift the trophy, beat Arsenal 1-0, with Pancho claiming the assist when Trevor Brooking headed home the winner.

“It's flown by,” he said of the Saints defeat. “It was a big disappointment for us because we'd worked hard to get back in the First Division after the first year, and then got to the cup final.

”It was fantastic but they had some decent players in their team. Jim McCalliog, my pal from United, when I first joined the club. He was the lad who looked after me because he was the experienced pro.

“Peter Osgood, Micky Channon, you know, big names. The game never really lived up to expectations because both teams just played average and the good thing is now I believe VAR are getting involved and they're going to disallow the goal!

”So we might get some winners' medals!“

Many still believe Stokes was offside when running through to beat Alex Stepney but manager Tommy Docherty vowed to bring the cup back to Manchester in 1977 and did just that, thanks to the 2-1 victory over Liverpool.

“When I do the hospitality, the guy on the mic is going: 'He stopped Liverpool winning the Treble',” added Pearson.

“It was such a great occasion to get there and play Liverpool, who were the best team by a mile, at the time. They had Kevin Keegan, my England partner, playing in the game and then, what happened after that, Kenny Dalglish took over.”

One-club man Matt Le Tissier is in charge of the home side this weekend, and it promises to be a good day out on the south coast, with a sizeable away following set to back the Reds.
