Hundreds participate in Joe Thompson fundraiser on Saturday

On Saturday, hundreds of fans, friends and ex-team-mates of former Manchester United forward Joe Thompson gathered at Old Trafford to begin his fundraiser, 'Walk with me for JT'.

Joe revealed in March that his cancer had returned for a third time, having undergone chemotherapy and stem cell transplantation in the past, and the 35-year-old is raising money for further treatment and pioneering testing that could help future generations.

'Walk with me for JT' was a challenge to walk 21 miles from Old Trafford to Rochdale - from where Joe started his career to where he finished it.

The journey from start to finish went via some of the other grounds in Greater Manchester, such as Salford City and Oldham Athletic.

Former Premier League stars Joleon Lescott and Chris Kirkland are among those who took part on Saturday, along with ex-Reds striker Fraizer Campbell, with hundreds of supporters turning out to show their backing.

After he reached the finish line, Joe was serenaded with chants of 'there's only one Joe Thompson,' with United Women star Ella Toone coming along to show her support too.

Thompson began his career in our Academy, where he spent seven years. After this, the forward forged a career in the Football League, playing for the likes of Tranmere Rovers, Rochdale, Carlisle and Bury.

After he retired, Joe became a regular presence on MUTV and has returned to our Academy to impart advice to the next generation of players.

The 35-year-old has always received the backing of our club during his career, both on and off the pitch, and we continue to support Joe as he looks to fundraise for his ongoing treatment.
