Women's preview: Bristol City v United

Manchester United Women travel to Bristol City on Sunday in the penultimate game of the 2020/21 WSL season.

It’s still all to play for in the Women’s Super League with United sitting three points behind the Champions League positions, while opponents Bristol City are just a point from safety going into the final two games.

Last weekend, Casey Stoney’s Women ran out comfortable winners against Tottenham Hotspur after goals from Christen Press, Jess Sigsworth and an Ella Toone brace handed the Reds all three points.

United will be looking to put in another impressive performance at Twerton Park this weekend against a side battling for every single available point.

Here’s all you need to know prior to Sunday’s clash..…

Hear what Casey's had to say ahead of the big game.

WHERE TO WATCH

The game will be streamed live on the FA Player in the UK and will be available to watch in full on MUTV from 19:00 BST on Sunday. Due to this weekend’s social media boycott, updates will not be available as usual across our various platforms.

TEAM NEWS

United will once more be without Tobin Heath as she continues her recovery from a long-term knee injury, ruling her out for the remainder of the season. Leah Galton is available however, after making her first appearance back in the side last weekend since suffering ankle ligament damage in February. Ivana Fuso remains sidelined through injury.
HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD

The reverse fixture in this season’s WSL saw United run out 6-1 winners at Leigh Sports Village, in the second-ever meeting between the sides. Goals from Jess Sigsworth, Millie Turner, and braces from Galton and Heath gave United our biggest league win of this season so far. The first of the two previous meetings came in January 2020, in which Bristol City ran out 1-0 victors in Manchester courtesy of an Ebony Salmon strike.

FORM GUIDE

Stoney’s side have had an inconsistent set of recent results, winning three of the last five and losing two. This is further highlighted in 2021, with United taking 12 points from a possible 27 (four wins, five losses).

Meanwhile, Bristol City are without a win in five league games, drawing three times and losing twice. Last weekend saw them score a 95th-minute equaliser to snatch a draw at Aston Villa, a result that very much keeps the relegation battle alive. The Vixens have won only twice all season in the WSL and will almost certainly have to increase that number if they are avoid the drop.

Jess Sigsworth explains why Sunday's game is so significant for the Reds.

ONE TO WATCH

Bristol City and England striker Ebony Salmon is the club’s top scorer this season with six goals. The ex-Red scored the decisive goal in Bristol City’s only win over United in January 2020 and could be the Vixens’ brightest attacking threat.
