Young Reds reach quarter-finals in Germany

Manchester United were knocked out of the Sparkasse & VGH Cup indoor tournament in Göttingen, Germany at the quarter-final stage, amid a flurry of goals.

The five-a-side format is one always enjoyed by the boys and a youthful squad, made up largely of first-year scholars, hit the net regularly in the three-day event for Under-19 players.

With Nicky Butt and Colin Little in attendance, the youngsters started with two wins on Friday night - beating Eichsfeld-Mitte 8-0 and AZ Alkmaar 1-0.

On Saturday, Eintracht Northeim were seen off 4-1 but United suffered a first reverse, when losing 2-1 to Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach. The team got back to winning ways with a 6-0 success against JSG Uslar/Solling to progress to the next round of the competition.

Augsburg overcame the Reds 3-1 but, again the response was convincing, as TuSpo Petershütte were beaten 6-0. This ensured a quarter-final tie against Austria Vienna, who won 5-1 to end United's reign as holders of the trophy, with Reece Devine our sole scorer.

Fortuna Dusseldorf, who knocked Fulham out at the last-eight stage, took home the silverware by beating FC Brugge 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in the final.

Alex Fojticek was voted Goalkeeper of the Tournament, even if the Reds fielded outfield players in goal in some fixtures, while our leading marksman was Mark Helm with seven, one more than Anthony Elanga.

Squad: Alex Fojticek; Lukasz Bejger, Oliver Denham, Reece Devine; Mark Helm, Charlie McCann, Dion McGhee, Harvey Neville, Connor Stanley; Anthony Elanga, Largie Ramazani.
