United’s 50 Premier League opponents: Blackburn Rovers

Friday 16 June 2023 16:56

To mark Manchester United facing a 50th different club in the Premier League, following Luton Town's promotion, we're recalling our record against each one and showing the highlights from some classic meetings.

Blackburn Rovers play their football in the Championship, but there was a time in which they were a constant feature in the Premier League and, of course, champions. Their 11-year stint in the top-flight came to an end in 2012, when they were relegated.

United have enjoyed plenty of memorable clashes with the Lancashire side during their time at the top, including the 7-1 victory that saw Dimitar Berbatov score five times, with Wayne Rooney and Ruud van Nistelrooy also among the Reds to enjoy finding the back of the net against this opposition.

United 3 Blackburn 2 (1998/99)

There has scarcely been a game between these two in which there hasn’t been a plethora of goals, even prior to this one. But the Reds showed their ability to see out a game with this one, despite the momentum almost carrying Blackburn to what would have been a famous comeback. United went into the break two goals to the good, courtesy of goals from Paul Scholes and Dwight Yorke. When Scholes added his second just before the hour mark, the game looked all but won. A late surge from Blackburn piled the pressure on, with Dario Marcolin and Nathan Blake scoring in quick succession to bring the deficit down to one. The Reds held on for a crucial three points, before going on to win the Premier League ahead of Arsenal by a single point and, ultimately, the Treble soon thereafter.

During Blackburn’s time in the Premier League, Ewood Park was a difficult place to go. Out of 18 games played away from the Theatre of Dreams in this fixture, the Reds picked up just seven wins, losing four and drawing seven. It has been the matter of the late, late show there on more than one occasion, but Carlos Tevez’s 88th-minute effort to snatch a point which proved crucial in our charge for the title, keeping matters in our own hands. Roque Santa Cruz opened the scoring for the hosts, but as we famously do, we popped up at the end with a late equaliser to ensure the points were shared. In the same season, we went on to win the league by just a two-point margin - making games like this all the more important.

United 7-1 Blackburn (2010/11)

As previously mentioned, games between United and Blackburn rarely lacked goals, with our biggest win coming in the 2010/2011 season by a six-goal margin. Berbatov was the main man at Old Trafford, opening the scoring just two minutes into the game. Ji-Sung Park scored 20 minutes later, before Berba quickly added his second. The Bulgarian completed his hat-trick after the half, with Nani making it five to the Reds a minute later. Berba wasn’t finished just yet, though, scoring twice more to take his tally to five for the game. Christopher Samba added a consolation towards the end, but it was Berbatov who was the darling of Stretford End that day.
