United forward Alexis Sanchez in action for Chile at Copa America.

Alexis injured as Chile finish fourth in Copa America

Sunday 07 July 2019 08:02

Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez was forced off with an injury after 17 minutes, as Chile suffered a 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the Copa America third-place play-off.

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero and Juventus star Paulo Dybala made it 2-0 to the victors at Corinthians Arena in Sao Paulo, before both sides had a man sent off in the 37th minute - Lionel Messi and Gary Medel received red cards following an angry altercation.

Although Messi's club colleague Arturo Vidal pulled a goal back for Chile with a second-half penalty, Argentina held on to claim third place at the expense of the team they lost to in the 2015 and 2016 finals. This year's Copa America champions will be Peru or the hosts Brazil, who will meet in Sunday's showpiece fixture at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro (kick-off 21:00 BST).
Alexis started all of Chile's six games in the tournament and finished it with two goals to his name - against Japan and Ecuador in the group stage. He also scored the decisive penalty when Chile beat Colombia 5-4 in a shootout to decide their goalless quarter-final clash.

Naturally, the no.7's full involvement in the tournament means he won't be in the United squad flying out of Manchester to Perth, Australia this afternoon for the start of Tour 2019.

You can watch all of Manchester United's pre-season games live on MUTV, including the clashes with Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan and AC Milan.
