United's 50 Premier League opponents: Blackpool

Saturday 17 June 2023 16:00

To mark Manchester United facing a 50th different club in the Premier League, following Luton Town's promotion, we're recalling our record against each one and showing the highlights from some classic meetings.

Spending just one season in the Premier League, Blackpool's fairy-tale top-flight tenure under Ian Holloway enjoyed a roller coaster of highs and lows in the 2010/11 campaign.

The Tangerines have plummeted as far as League Two in the years since, but were back in the Championship for 2022/23, although a term that resulted in relegation means they'll kick off 2023/24 in the third tier.

United have faced Blackpool just twice following their brief flutter in the Premier League, with both contests home and away resulting in entertaining encounters.

BLACKPOOL 2 UNITED 3 (2010/11)

United were made to work for a hard-fought victory on the North-West coast, with Holloway's side racing into a two-goal lead during the first half at Bloomfield Road. Craig Cathcart got the ball rolling after 15 minutes, nodding home emphatically to score his first for the club, before DJ Campbell flicked in a second shortly before the break. What ensued next is what some may refer to as one of the Reds' greatest ever comebacks, with all three goals scored inside the final 15 minutes. First, Dimitar Berbatov smashed home Darren Fletcher's cross to hand Sir Alex Ferguson's side a lifeline, before Javier Hernandez came off the bench to level the game, smashing past Richard Kingson. The comeback was complete when Berbatov lashed home the winner with two minutes to play, securing a vital victory on the way to the title that very year.

The Reds lifted the Premier League trophy after defeating Blackpool in the reverse fixture on the final day of the season, having clinched the crown a week earlier with a 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers. Ji-Sung Park opened the scoring after 20 minutes against the Tangerines, before to-be Liverpool man Charlie Adam equalised just before the interval with a superb free-kick in front of the Stretford End. Gary Taylor-Fletcher then swept home to hand the visitors a shock lead, which took them towards safety from Premier League relegation. Brazilian midfielder Anderson got us back on level terms just 10 minutes later however, before Ian Evatt put through his own net as United regained the advantage. Michael Owen curled home late on to seal the victory, confirming Blackpool's return to the second tier, making for contrasting emotions between the two sections of supporters at the full-time whistle.
