Opposition watch: Coventry City

Thursday 18 April 2024 13:23

Coventry City are enjoying another impressive season in the Championship and will pose tough opposition for Manchester United this weekend in our Emirates FA Cup semi-final showdown at Wembley.

The Sky Blues are managed by former Red Mark Robins and sit eighth in England's second tier, still in with a chance of making the play-offs this season, despite a costly derby defeat at Birmingham City last time out.

Ahead of their final four games of the campaign, Coventry are bidding to reach a first FA Cup final in 37 years, after their famous 1987 success over Tottenham Hotspur.

With plenty to watch out for, here are five things you need to know prior to this weekend's contest in the capital...

How to watch and follow United's FA Cup semi-final

Here's all the essential info for Sunday's last-four clash with Coventry City at Wembley.

THE PRICE IS WRIGHT

Forward Haji Wright is enjoying quite the debut campaign in English football, after signing from Turkish side Antalyaspor last summer.

With 17 goals and seven assists to his name already, the United States international can operate both down the middle of City's attack or from the left.

Wright's late strike at Molineux last month etched his name into Coventry folklore as he scored a 101st minute winner to sink Wolves and book his side a Wembley date against the Reds and he is certainly one United will have to keep a close eye on throughout.
SIMMS'S MANCUNIAN CONNECTION

Coventry's go-to man in attack is former Everton forward Ellis Simms who left the Toffees in July 2023. With an impressive tally of 18 strikes to his name already for the club, the Oldham-born striker is establishing himself as quite a handful for opposition defences.

Having also spent time with Manchester City during his Academy days, Simms will need no extra incentive to make an impact against the Reds on the big stage.

"As a kid, I was born in Oldham, my Dad was a massive City fan so, whenever I got the chance, I went down to watch them and I also came through the Man City Academy," said the 23-year-old to ITV Sport recently.
GODDEN'S IMPRESSIVE RISE

Striker Matt Godden has enjoyed a superb rise in English football and began his journey with Scunthorpe United as a youngster.

Loan spells at Dartford and Tamworth soon followed before he left the Iron to restart his career with then-National League South outfit Ebbsfleet United.

Now with Coventry, whom he joined back in 2019, the 32-year-old recently netted his 50th goal for the Sky Blues and an FA Cup final appearance at Wembley would surely be the icing on the cake of an impressive journey.

FAMILIAR FACE IN THE DUGOUT

As we all know, Robins spent the first part of his career at Old Trafford and scored a crucial goal on our way to winning the FA Cup back in 1990, during a third-round tie with Nottingham Forest.

Having formed an eye-catching career in management following his retirement, the 54-year-old has been at the Coventry Building Society Arena for seven years as head coach.

Another name hoping to claim a scalp, Robins would no doubt love nothing more than for his side to knock his boyhood favourites out of the competition, as he targets a potential third piece of silverware with City.

HUGE FOLLOWING

City have sold an estimated 36,000 tickets for the semi-final and are expected to be backed by a huge sea of sky blue this weekend.

United's unrivalled support will no doubt bid to outsing our counterparts throughout but the atmosphere is expected to be electric throughout proceedings.

Here's hoping Ten Hag's men can give our loyal fans something huge to cheer about come Sunday evening in the capital.
