Wheatley picks up Premier League debut ball
Ethan Wheatley has been presented with his Premier League Debut Ball, to mark his maiden appearance in the division last season.
The award is handed out to all homegrown Academy players who have been developed domestically for three years or more, prior to their 21st birthday.
Hence, Wheatley is our latest recipient, as the 18-year-old came on as a substitute in April's 4-2 victory over Sheffield United at Old Trafford. The striker also featured in subsequent matches against Crystal Palace and Arsenal.
There was, of course, extra significance to Wheatley's debut, as he became our 250th Academy graduate to appear for the first team.
The teenager spoke about his delight at the time, telling MUTV: "It’s a great club with a massive history, especially in the Academy as well. It’s just an honour to make my debut. And then that number 250 is just a little extra as well."
Nick Cox, Darren Fletcher and Travis Binnion were on hand to present Wheatley with the memento at Carrington.
The special moment for the department took place in the parents' lounge in the Academy building at our base, in front of the wall displaying the full list of those who have broken into the first team over the years.
The Stockport-born hitman has already started both pre-season matches this month, against Rosenborg and Rangers, and shown responsibility in leading the line.
Congratulations Ethan, from all at United!
