Jackie Groenen

Groenen aiming for success with United

Tuesday 30 July 2019 15:00

Manchester United Women’s new signing Jackie Groenen is hoping to achieve success in her first year with the Reds.

The Dutch midfielder has completed her move from German side FFC Frankfurt and, in doing so, has become the first overseas player to join Casey Stoney's side.

Despite being just 24 years old, Groenen has a wealth of experience and has already played in England with Chelsea Women, while amassing 54 caps for the Netherlands national side.

It's official - Jackie is United Women's first overseas player.

She played a pivotal role for the Dutch at the Women’s World Cup in France earlier this summer, featuring in all seven games for the eventual runners-up and netting the winner against Sweden in the semi-finals.

Groenen is hoping she can bring her winning mentality to United ahead of our first campaign in the Women’s Super League.

“We’ve just got promotion, so it’s our first year in the top league, but I’m quite hopeful,” the central-midfielder said in her first interview with club media.

“I’ve seen a couple of the games [from last season] and the games were very good, so I’m quite hopeful that we’ll do well next season. It’s all about the beginning, I think, and we’ll see how it goes.”

“I’m really excited. I can’t wait to get started, ” she added. “It’s such a massive club and I’m happy to be back in England."

Groenen will not be alone in wanting to lift silverware in the upcoming season, especially after such a successful 2018/19 campaign for the Reds in which we stormed to the FA Women’s Championship title and enjoyed two cup runs.

At the heart of all winning teams is an ambitious manager, and Groenen said she is looking forward to working under United boss Casey Stoney, who she came up against during her days at Chelsea.

“Casey was one of the main factors about coming here,” said Groenen. “I like how Casey thinks, I like how she likes to win everything and plan everything.

“She is so competitive and that’s what I’ve always wanted to do. I’ve always wanted to play at the highest level and I feel like with Casey everything will be well-arranged.

“I used to play against her so I know how physical she can be! So I’ll just listen to everything she says probably.”

Groenen also had a message for the United fans ahead of the new season: “I can’t wait to meet you guys and I’m really excited to be playing for this club.

“It’s been a dream. Ever since I got here, everything’s been special so I can’t wait to meet everyone. I hope you guys can enjoy me too.”
