Who was United's Player of the Match against PSG?

Wednesday 11 October 2023 11:59

Geyse etched her name in Manchester United folklore on Tuesday evening, becoming the first Red to be voted Player of the Match in a UEFA Women’s Champions League fixture.

Having sustained a dead leg in our 2-2 draw against Arsenal the previous Friday, the Brazilian came off the bench at half-time in the PSG game and really flipped the contest on its head.

After her team had weathered the visitors' storm of the first half, Geyse entered the fray and offered us a whole new dynamic going forward.

Within seconds of coming on, the one-time UCL winner drifted in from the left before unleashing her first effort on goal, albeit it sailed over on that occasion.

Tabitha Chawinga’s second-half strike would ultimately give the visitors the lead, with the Reds chasing the game.

But it was the introduction of striker Melvine Malard - along with a midfield switch in Hinata Miyazawa - that really sparked life into our display, with Geyse in particular finding more joy down the right.

Our no.23 turned PSG defender Sakina Karchaoui inside out on more than one occasion, and almost assisted an instant equaliser when she played in Leah Galton who momentarily appeared to have scored, due to the deceptive rattle of the side netting.
Unsurprisingly, Geyse played a key role in our eventual leveller, though. Biding her time on the left, the eventually played the ball through to Ella Toone in acres of space who pulled it back to Miyazawa, but the Japan international saw her effort deflected behind for a corner.

The resulting set piece saw Katie Zelem plant a delivery onto the head of Millie Turner, who sent it back across goal where Malard provided the finishing touch to write another piece of history for the Reds, scoring our first-ever goal in this competition.

Geyse was a worthy winner of our Player of the Match accolade, gleaning 30 percent of the fan vote, with the equally impressive Mary Earps being ranked second (23 percent) and Malard finishing third in the poll (21 percent).
