Maguire: We'll not get carried away

Sunday 19 October 2025 19:53

Harry Maguire has said Manchester United's away win against Liverpool will be used as "motivation" to kick on further in the Premier League this season.

The 32-year-old rose above a packed box in the 84th minute, with the game locked in stalemate, to nod home the winner past Giorgi Marmardashvili.

Cue ecstatic scenes in the away end, as Maguire ran over to defiantly tap the United badge on his chest, as he sealed our first win at Anfield since 2016.

It was an incredible occasion, but the Englishman is determined that the group won’t get carried away after Sunday’s celebrations, and instead use the triumph as motivation to keep building.

“We’ll not get carried away, because we know this club is not in a position to get carried away,” Maguire told Sky Sports after the match.

“We need to use this as motivation to reach levels that they’ve [Liverpool] reached in recent years, because that’s where this club should be at.

“In this club, it’ll mean a lot for this week, and then we’ve got Brighton at home next Saturday.

“We know that it’s a big win, and we’re going to get spoken about highly this week. The lads have got to remain calm-headed.”

While focus will quickly shift to that 17:30 assignment next weekend, Maguire is under no illusions about how big a win this Anfield victory is for United.

“It means everything,” he admitted. “It’s the old cliche, ‘it’s only three points’, but it’s definitely not.

“It means a lot more than that to the boys, to the club, to the fans.

“It is only three points on the table, but to come here and do it over Liverpool, and like I said, they have been a top team over the years, and they’ve been a lot better than us in recent years, so it’s nice to get one over them.”
