How to follow Arsenal v United Women

Wednesday 14 February 2024 12:00

Manchester United return to Women’s Super League action this weekend, as we face Arsenal in front of a close to sold-out Emirates Stadium.

Marc Skinner’s side are unbeaten in our last three games, seeing off Aston Villa and Brighton in the league before beating Southampton to progress to the quarter-finals of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup.

The Reds are aiming to close the gap on the current top three and a win would put us within a point of third-placed Arsenal.

Ahead of Saturday’s 12:30 GMT kick-off, here is everything you need to know…

Confirmed: United Women's FA Cup opponents

WHAT IS THE TEAM NEWS?

United's long-term absentees Gabby George, Emma Watson and Jess Simpson remain unavailable for selection due to their knee injuries, while Hinata Miyazawa’s foot injury keeps her out of action as well.

Jayde Riviere was absent for our fifth-round victory over Southampton after picking up a knock in our last league outing against Brighton. It looks as though she is set to be sidelined for the Reds this weekend, too, having withdrawn from Canada’s squad for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which begins next week. Skinner could provide an update on her, and other impending team news, in his press conference on Thursday.

The Gunners will be without United States defender Emily Fox, who is on international duty ahead of the Gold Cup, while Vivianne Miedema is expected to miss out as she nurses a small injury. Swedish centre-back Amanda Ilestedt is expected to be in contention, after returning from an illness that kept her out of their FA Cup defeat to Manchester City.

THE OPPOSITION

After reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League last term, and with the return of players like Beth Mead and Miedema from long-term knee injuries, expectations coming into the 2023/24 campaign were high for the Gunners. A shock exit in the first-round of qualifying for the UCL to Paris FC was not on the cards, nor was losing to Liverpool at the Emirates on the opening day of the season.

Their form soon picked up, however, and it looked as though they were ready to go toe-to-toe with Chelsea for the WSL title, especially in December when they dispatched Emma Hayes’s side in a comfortable 4-1 victory that not many saw coming. However, another shock defeat to Tottenham Hotspur away, followed by losing to relegation-threatened West Ham, saw their title hopes fade rapidly. A defeat to Manchester City last weekend saw Jonas Eidevall’s exit the FA Cup, too, leaving them with the Conti Cup to play for along with a place in the top three needed to secure a return to UCL action next season.
