How to watch and follow Liverpool v United Women

Tuesday 21 November 2023 09:00

Manchester United Women’s quest for glory in the Continental Tyres League Cup continues on Wednesday evening against rivals Liverpool.

Both teams are looking to win the competition for the first time, with the Reds aiming to build on the thumping 7-0 win over Liverpool’s Merseyside neighbours Everton in our first Group B match earlier this month.

Marc Skinner’s side - who are fourth in the Women’s Super League - will be hoping to bounce back immediately from Sunday’s 3-1 defeat to City in a historic first WSL Manchester derby at Old Trafford, which ended our unbeaten domestic start to the season.

Here are the key things you need to know ahead of our midweek game…

Skinner: We win and we lose together

HOW CAN I WATCH THE GAME?

The match at Prenton Park, in Birkenhead, will kick off at 19:00 GMT and will be broadcast live on MUTV, only for those in the UK and Ireland, due to WSL broadcasting restrictions. It will also be shown on the FA Player.

For those who cannot watch the fixtures, we will provide team news as well as half-time and full-time updates in the United App, with a match report and reaction following after the full-time whistle.

WHAT’S THE TEAM NEWS?

There are no fresh injury concerns for the Reds, with Emma Watson, Gabby George and Jessica Simpson all long-term absentees. Aoife Mannion is likely to be unavailable again as the centre-back continues her recovery.

Jayde Riviere completed 45 minutes against City at Old Trafford, with Skinner revealing after the match that she had taken a knock in training a couple of days prior.

For Liverpool, Emma Koivisto and Mia Enderby returned to the squad after injury for Saturday’s game at Chelsea and could be involved again.

THE OPPOSITION

Our hosts have had a mixed start to the campaign, currently sitting sixth in the WSL table - one place higher than their overall finish last season. After winning their first two games against Arsenal and Aston Villa this term without conceding, they have only won once in their subsequent five league outings and were beaten 5-1 at leaders Chelsea on Saturday.

In the Conti Cup, Matt Beard’s side are yet to earn any points in Group B, after a 2-1 defeat at Leicester and 4-3 reverse at home to Manchester City in their first two matches in the competition.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS

United Women have a strong record against Liverpool, winning on five of the six occasions we’ve met.

Indeed, it was against the Merseysiders in the Conti League Cup that we played our very first competitive match back in August 2018, when Lizzie Arnot’s late goal earned United a 1-0 victory.

Liverpool’s only success against United came by a 3-1 scoreline in the same competition in October 2020.

We completed the double over our rivals in the WSL last season, as an emphatic 6-0 victory in front of a record Leigh Sports Village crowd was followed by a 1-0 win on the final day of the campaign. The teams met as recently as 13 September in a pre-season friendly at Carrington, which United won 3-1.
