Lee Grant and Andreas Pereira

How the Reds are preparing to face San Jose on tour

Saturday 21 July 2018 06:59

Manchester United's players took part in a post-match recovery session in Los Angeles on Friday afternoon, after flying back from Phoenix where the opening pre-season match against Club America ended 1-1.

The squad members who played for the majority of Thursday's game did some work in the gym, while the remainder - the likes of Matteo Darmian, Tim Fosu-Mensah, Angel Gomes, Tahith Chong and Ethan Hamilton - trained on the field at the impressive UCLA campus.

The two goalkeepers who faced Club America for one half apiece, Lee Grant and Joel Pereira, went through some specialist drills before the squad's sun-kissed session ended with a dip in the outside ice-baths to further aid the recovery process.

Bryan Robson joined his fellow United legend Denis Irwin in watching the activity and later told ManUtd.com how impressed he has been by the training on tour.

“The lads have been doing a lot of high intensity work early on in the sessions and that has stood them in good stead,” said the former Reds captain.

“I thought the boys looked good for the first game, they had a good recovery session today and were all moving well with not too much stiffness. They’re looking good so far."

Saturday's training session will be the first on tour to feature Alexis Sanchez, following his separate arrival in the United States. Having worked with a fitness coach back in Manchester, the Chilean star will be ready to play in the next match of Tour 2018, presented by Aon - against San Jose Earthquakes in Santa Clara, at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday afternoon local time.
MUTV's live coverage of Sunday's match will begin at 21:00 BST, with team news and build-up followed by the full 90 minutes from 22:00 BST (14:00 local). For info on how you can see all the pre-season games online, visit mutv.com.
