Line-ups debate: Who forms the front three?

Wednesday 19 January 2022 12:30

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has confirmed he is set to field a 4-3-3 formation at Brentford, with three attacking slots up for grabs.

Mason Greenwood, Edinson Cavani and Anthony Elanga started the 2-2 draw at Aston Villa last time out, but there could be more options available for a first game at the Brentford Community Stadium.

We will announce the starting XI at 19:00 GMT, an hour ahead of kick-off, on MUTV, ManUtd.com and the Official App. Don't forget to enter our United Predictions competition to be in with a chance of winning a signed shirt.

When speaking on Tuesday, Ralf was hopeful Marcus Rashford and Cristiano Ronaldo would return to the squad after injury, and Anthony Martial was also in contention to travel, providing he completed the last training session in Manchester.

Jadon Sancho came on for Elanga at Villa Park but there is a doubt over Jesse Lingard, who has an ankle knock.

I PREDICT RONALDO WILL RETURN

After two games without Cristiano, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that doesn't become an unwanted hat-trick. Ralf shared that hope when explaining why our no.7 missed the trip to Villa Park - it was a precautionary measure, designed to boost his prospects of being fit to face Brentford.

If CR7 does return, in the week when his trademark 'siuuu' cry has been adopted by tennis crowds at the Australian Open, then naturally I'd predict him to score our first goal on our first-ever visit to Brentford Community Stadium. Indeed, he could be the only scorer in an away game against newly promoted opponents - just as he was at Norwich in December.

The Bees were miserly hosts for both Chelsea and Manchester City last month, restricting them to 2-0 and 1-0 victories respectively in the Carabao Cup and Premier League. Breaking them down could therefore require plenty of youthful pace on the flanks and I'm therefore taking a punt on Anthony Elanga starting for the second successive game and his fellow Academy graduate Mason Greenwood completing an exciting front three.

I PREDICT RASHFORD WILL RETURN

There is still some doubt over whether Marcus will be fit enough to come back into the squad for the 20:00 GMT kick-off but I think he could be a good option with his pace likely to pose problems for the Bees' three-man defence.

Ralf has already explained how the England international had looked really impressive in training, before picking up a dead leg, and hopefully the enforced break will enable him to get up to full speed again and provide another option in one of the wider attacking slots. I'm not sure why (I'm hoping it's not just because of the home team's red-and-white stripes) but I've been wondering if tonight's clash could end up being similar to the one at Sheffield United last season, when Marcus scored twice in an entertaining 3-2 victory.

Brentford have shown their qualities, particularly at their new ground, and it could make for an exciting affair in front of an expectant crowd, but I hope we can expose some holes in their backline. That is where Marcus might come in and my guess is that he could start with Cristiano Ronaldo and Mason Greenwood, despite the obvious claims of others - including Elanga, who looked the part against Aston Villa.
