Men's Goal of the Season poll opens
Voting is now open for Manchester United's Men's Goal of the Season award for 2024/25.
While the Reds have undoubtedly endured a disappointing Premier League campaign, Ruben Amorim’s squad have netted some fantastic goals, in both domestic and European competition.
With a UEFA Europa League final still to be played, our list of nominees for this year’s trophy includes three goals from the competition, which we hope to win in Bilbao on Wednesday 21 May.
Unlike in 2023/24, when Alejandro Garnacho’s overhead kick — later to earn him the prestigious Puskas Award — was the clear favourite, this season’s list is a tighter competition.
It includes three brilliant long-range strikes. The first is Casemiro’s thumping right-footed effort, which satisfyingly came off the underside of the crossbar against Leicester City. Alejandro Garnacho is then included twice for two typical winger goals, against Leicester at Old Trafford and Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium. On both occasions, he cut inside to curl one into the top right corner.
Then, there are the goals which combined both quality and significance. The first was from Amad, who controlled Lisandro Martinez’s late through-ball deftly and with great ingenuity to beat Manchester City’s Ederson, before finishing from an acute angle to triumph in December’s derby at the Etihad Stadium.
A month on, Martinez himself followed with a thumping effort in front of United’s travelling supporters at Anfield. Bruno Fernandes had fed him through in our 2-2 draw against Liverpool.
The captain was next, with his sweet finish at Arsenal in the FA Cup, also in front of the travelling Reds. Garnacho had driven forward on the counter-attack in a pulsating cup tie, and Fernandes thwacked his bouncing pass inside the post and into the side-netting.
Another of Bruno’s goals against Arsenal makes the list, too: a curling and dipping free-kick in the Premier League at Old Trafford.
Finally, there are the Europa League trio. Rasmus Hojlund’s is the first in the league phase against Bodo/Glimt. Our Danish forward brought down Noussair Mazraoui’s cross with his left foot and then finished with his right, squeezing it through two defenders brilliantly.
English midfield duo Kobbie Mainoo and Mason Mount round off our poll. Kobbie’s came first, in that breathless 5-4 extra-time quarter-final win over Lyon at the Theatre of Dreams. When hope seemed to be fading, he showed hardly believable coolness to control Casemiro’s pass, get it out of his feet and curl it perfectly into the far corner. That was the equaliser, before Harry Maguire’s header secured victory.
In the recent semi-final second leg, Mount saw the Athletic Club goalkeeper off his line, took a touch and lobbed it home with aplomb. That topped off a brilliant Old Trafford night as we secured final qualification.
McTominay, Cavani, Fernandes or Mount?
