Late change to the United side

Tuesday 15 February 2022 19:15

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has selected his side to take on Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford.

The home fans will be hoping for three points to boost our bid for a top-four place after successive 1-1 draws with Burnley and Southampton.

There were initially two changes to the XI that started the Saints encounter at the weekend but Raphael Varane was taken ill before the warm-up and dropped out.

Victor Lindelof deputises at the heart of the defence, alongside Harry Maguire, with Tom Heaton added to the bench.

The United players enter Old Trafford ahead of this evening's clash with Brighton...

The boss has opted to recall Fred into the midfield after he was forced to isolate due to contracting COVID-19. The Brazilian replaces Paul Pogba, who is being treated carefully following his injury lay-off.

Anthony Elanga is also included in a wide role after coming off the bench on Saturday. The youngster takes the place of fellow Academy graduate Marcus Rashford, who is the chief attacking option among the substitutes.

“It is a bit about fresh legs after both Paul [Pogba] and Marcus [Rashford] played in the last couple of games and Paul is coming back from a long-term injury so that was the idea behind that,” the boss told MUTV about the initial two changes to the XI.

“I think, for us, it is important for us to show our nice face, our beautiful face. I said it is a bit like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and it is about, today, showing for the whole game our beautiful face, the nice side of what we did in the last three games and that is what it is all about.”

Former Red Danny Welbeck is on the bench for the Seagulls, who have recalled Yves Bissouma in midfield. Tariq Lamptey is also among the substitutes.

United: De Gea; Dalot, Lindelof, Maguire (c), Shaw; McTominay, Fred, Fernandes; Elanga, Ronaldo, Sancho.

Substitutes: Heaton, Henderson, Jones, Telles, Wan-Bissaka, Lingard, Mata, Pogba, Rashford.
