Thai Reds reflect on 'unforgettable' Old Trafford experience
The first Manchester derby of the season didn't go our way last month, but it was, nevertheless, a memorable day at Old Trafford, as we celebrated the life of Sir Bobby Charlton.
It was a special moment for our Thai supporters' club, too – a delegation was in town to mark the branch's 10th anniversary with a special pitchside reception.
While a melancholy feel covered Old Trafford before kick-off, the Thailand Reds were doubly proud to be present on such a poignant day in M16.
“Being an international supporter means that we don't get to travel to Manchester regularly,” explains the group's lead contact, Pete Warinsee.
“But everyone knows about United's history. Sir Bobby… he was a true gentleman. I got a chance to be in the same room with him and he had such a gracious presence. I was starstruck. I adored him so much. He was all smiling and chatting with other guests.
“I was afraid that asking for a handshake would be an interruption of his time. Now, I wish I had walked up to him and greeted him.”
The branch were delighted to meet Gary Pallister ahead of the match, and Pete says they are focused on the future, after a hugely positive first 10 years.
“It was an unforgettable experience, to receive such a recognition – being on the pitchside prior to the match and meeting one of my childhood heroes, Gary Pallister. Now, I'm daydreaming of the 20th anniversary!
“We were just a group of fans who were passionate about Man United. It started with a group of us gathering regularly, translating United news on our website, playing five, seven, or 11-a-side against fans of other teams.
“We became an official Manchester United supporters’ club in 2013,” he continues.
“It has basically shaped us into a proper supporters’ club. We have appointed proper people to properly run our branch.
“Now a decade has passed. It's a remarkable milestone for us. I wish to continue being a bridge between Man United and local supporters and fans.”
