Train hard, fight easy: One Red's incredible walk
A diehard United fan will undertake an epic walk from London to Manchester this week, to raise money for struggling veterans.
Andrew Schofield, a former military police officer, will complete the journey in just five days (Monday 5 to Friday 9 December), as part of Walking With the Wounded's Christmas campaign 'Walking Home for Christmas.'
The avid Red has revealed how a chance conversation with his brother helped lift him out of his own dark depression and encouraged him to seek support for his declining mental health.
Now he is walking to raise money and drive awareness for other veterans that are encountering similar problems.
“This walk is a physical representation of my own and many other people’s mental health journeys,” he explained.
“It’s tough, lonely, unpredictable and feels impossible to overcome. What I'm doing is ridiculous and it's tough and it's going to feel impossible.
“There’s a military saying: 'Train hard, fight easy.' So if you train hard, hopefully, the actual event itself is a bit easier. You’ve got the momentum of the event itself, the adrenaline that will help spur me on and get me through, but absolutely up to now the worst bit of this is training for it.”
At the heart of Walking With The Wounded’s mission is a simple belief – that those who served, deserve.
Whether wounded mentally, socially or physically, they deserve the care, support and means they and their families need to function in society, serving in the communities in which they live, reigniting their sense of purpose and making a positive contribution again.
Walking With The Wounded gets those who’ve served – and their families – back on their feet. What Andy is doing via this extraordinary challenge will not only create awareness for those who might be suffering to come forward for support but also the funds he is raising will help make a critical difference to veterans in need and their families this Christmas and beyond.
