Skinner: It's disappointing to only take a point

Monday 16 October 2023 12:01

Marc Skinner insists there is learning for Manchester United Women to take from Sunday's 1-1 draw with Leicester City, as his side were left to rue missed chances on a frustrating afternoon.

The Reds did end up salvaging a WSL point through Maya Le Tissier's equaliser, after the visitors went ahead on the hour mark, but could not find the back of the net for a second time.

The result keeps our unbeaten run going this season but, speaking to the press after the game, Skinner shared United's disappointment at not claiming a victory on the afternoon.

A DISAPPOINTING RESULT

"We rotated today because we have a heavy schedule. I felt like we did enough to win the game but we needed to be more clinical in the final bits.

"The build-up [play] was fine. It’s disappointing to only take a point, especially because Leicester only had a 0.2 expected goals. They took their chance at the end of the day.

"Credit to Leicester – I don’t want to walk away from here and not credit them because I don’t think that’s right but the reality is that we need to be better at finishing the game and taking three points.

"We will learn. We have a lot of things to take into the game with PSG and they come thick and fast which is good."

NEEDING TO BE MORE CLINICAL

"I think the reality is that you look at Leicester who are at the top of the league and you have to respect that.

"We knew we could have more possession but we just had to be a little bit ruthless with it. There were moments when we had chances that we have to score.

"Hini [Miyazawa’s] chance, when she gets into the flow, she will tap that into the corner like she has done all week.

"There is those little factors, even at the end we had some flash chances. I just felt like Leicester read it a bit better."

Skinner: We need to be more ruthless

Marc Skinner says his United side weren't good enough in the final third, after a 1-1 draw with Leicester in the WSL...

THE WOMEN'S SUPER LEAGUE

"I feel this is a really open league this season. I think it’s going to be different this season.

"I also think that the top four from last season have not started particularly well yet.

"We have new players, I think nearly every team is facing that, we have a consistency issue but that will fix itself in a few games. We just have to muddle our way through this part."

GABBY GEORGE'S INJURY

"There’s no news yet but obviously it does not look like a good one. We will wait and see the final assessment.

"I can rest assured that Gabby is in the best hands."
