Match preview: United Women v Everton

Thursday 28 March 2024 12:05

Manchester United Women host Everton at Leigh Sports Village in the WSL on Sunday, at 12:00 BST.

The Reds will be looking for a strong response to last weekend's Manchester derby defeat at the Etihad Stadium.

Everton are without a victory in their last four games, however they did end a streak of three consecutive defeats with a credible 0-0 draw at home to rivals Liverpool last time out.

Jayde Riviere appeared to pick up an injury against City after slipping on the turf at the Etihad, and our no.14 was replaced by Aoife Mannion shortly after this incident.

Skinner may provide an update on the Canadian's availability for this weekend in his press conference on Friday, as well as Leah Galton, who has missed our last three matches.

Hinata Miyazawa could play a part in the next few weeks after returning to training on grass recently, while Gabby George, Emma Watson and Jess Simpson continue their recovery from long-term injuries.

For the visitors, Denmark internationals Karen Holmgaard and Katrine Veje could both be involved after they made their respective comebacks against Liverpool at Goodison Park.

Defender Elise Stenevik is eligible for selection after serving a one-match ban last weekend following her dismissal against Aston Villa.

Watson optimistic about comeback

Reds midfielder Emma Watson talks to UTD Podcast about recovering from an ACL injury.

This will be the third match between United and Everton this season, with the Reds looking to keep up our 100 per cent record over Brian Sorensen's side in 2023/24.

Skinner's team recorded a 5-0 victory over the Toffees in the reverse league fixture at Walton Hall Park in October. Melvine Malard found the back of the net in the first half before Nikita Parris and Rachel Williams both scored two goals each after half-time to complete a brilliant performance on the road.

Several weeks later, we kicked off our Conti Cup campaign with a rampant 7-0 triumph at home to Everton. Parris scored a hat-trick with further goals from Williams, Hayley Ladd, Geyse and Galton capping another dominant display from the Reds.

The Blues are currently 10th in the WSL in 2023/24, picking up four wins, three draws and 10 defeats from their 17 games so far. It's unlikely they will be able to match the sixth-place finish they achieved last season.

Sorensen's team are winless in their last four matches in all competitions, including three losses, although they were only by one-goal margins and two of them came against Manchester City and Chelsea.

Everton are the lowest scorers in the top flight this season with 14 goals, which has contributed to their current position in the league table.
