Cunha: Pressure is a privilege at United

Friday 25 July 2025 18:26

Playing for Manchester United is a privilege, Matheus Cunha told journalists at Chicago’s Soldier Field stadium, when asked about the pressure of representing the Reds.

The Brazilian international joined us from fellow Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers in June, completing a childhood dream that stemmed from watching United at his grandmother’s house.

Fans now eagerly anticipate the opportunity to watch him at Old Trafford, alongside recent arrival from Brentford, Bryan Mbeumo.

With both Matheus and Bryan’s transfers obviously attracting global media attention, in addition to the day-to-day focus on United which stretches across the year, our new no.10 was asked how he’ll cope with the pressure.

“I really think the pressure at this club is a privilege,” he said.

“It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world and when Ruben came to me and showed me the project, I felt like it’s a challenge I want to do for my career. United is a club I needed to be at, and like I say it’s a big privilege.”

Cunha has already been a positive influence on the environment at United, with his smiling nature combined with a fierce competitiveness in training and, clearly, great quality.

He demonstrated that character and ability at Wolves and, having netted 15 Premier League goals last season, there was understandably significant attention from many clubs.

But for Matheus, it was only ever going to be United. He reiterated to the press that to be a player at Old Trafford was always his dream, but said it was also about how the project was sold to him by Ruben Amorim.

“When I arrived, I had a good welcome,” he explained.

“These kind of things can help you a lot, to make you feel part of the group. Everything I can bring to help the team go forward, I’m very humble to do. I feel completely fine.”
