United Review celebrates the life of Sir Bobby

Friday 27 October 2023 16:00

In normal circumstances, the 191st Manchester derby would be front and centre on the cover of our matchday programme, United Review.

But these are, of course, poignant times here at Old Trafford, as we come to terms with the passing of arguably the greatest United player of them all: Sir Bobby Charlton.

The new issue of UR leads with a simply beautiful image of the boy from Ashington and, inside, we pay our respects to the 1966 Ballon d'Or winner with an in-depth, 28-page tribute to his life and legacy.

The programme for Tuesday's night's 1-0 win over Copenhagen saw us cover the sad news, but as the majority of that issue went to print before Sir Bobby's death, a more comprehensive celebration of his story had to wait until this weekend's edition. Hopefully, we have done his genius justice...

Heartfelt posts continue to pour in for the late, great Sir Bobby Charlton via our digital book of condolence.

Typically, we'd encourage all Reds to head straight to Erik ten Hag's manager's column ahead of a match but, this time, you'll want to turn straight to page 22, where Sir Alex Ferguson has supplied a marvellous eulogy on his great friend, Sir Bobby.

It's the first time the legendary Scot has spoken publicly since the passing of his wife, Lady Cathy, so we thank him for providing this moving contribution at such a difficult personal moment. As always, Sir Alex's thoughts make for must-read material.

And there's much, much more on Sir Bobby: features on his long, remarkable road to the top of the game, a look at his 10 defining moments, plus a selection of the best classic images from his career. There's posters too and, of course, all of the amazing stats pertaining to a footballer who was, at one time, the record goalscorer for both Manchester United and England. Not bad for a midfielder...
While Sunday will see plenty more tributes to Sir Bobby, we're not forgetting that there is an important match to be played too. You can read Erik ten Hag's thoughts ahead of kick-off, as always, and we've also got an exclusive interview with the match-winner from this fixture last season, Marcus Rashford.

Paddy Crerand is back with another superb column, to share his own memories of his long-time team-mate Sir Bobby, while we also hear from our Thai supporters' club, as they mark their 10-year anniversary. We'll meet the new fan that features in our iconic United Review handshake illustration, Danny Moore of Middleton, and we've even squeezed a few pages in on Sunday's opposition, Pep Guardiola's Manchester City.

We hope it's an unique, exceptional issue of our matchday programme, dedicated to an exceptional footballer and an exceptional human being: the one and only Sir Bobby Charlton.
