Premier League's offside update

Manchester United's game at Newcastle United on Sunday will be our first in the Premier League to feature semi-automated offside technology.

After a successful trial in the Emirates FA Cup this term, the process has been introduced across top-flight matches this weekend.

Our fixture awa to Carabao Cup winners Newcastle United is set for a 16:30 BST kick-off.

The technology was also tested non-live in the division and is being used to help provide support for VAR in making quicker calls when it comes to offside.

It relies on optical player tracking and virtual graphics to provide swifter and clearer placing of the lines involved in the decision-making process.

The Premier League stated that it has "worked in collaboration with PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Board) and sports data and technology company Genius Sports" to develop the new system.

The first league match to use it was Manchester City's 5-2 win over Crystal Palace at the Etihad Stadium, and the process appeared to work well in Saturday's top-flight fixtures, with speedier verdicts on a lot of close calls.
