Williams: I'll take Solskjaer's nickname!

Manchester United Women forward Rachel Williams has developed something of a cult-hero status among our brilliant fanbase since joining the club last summer.

Although her jovial character and palpable footballing wisdom help towards that, the experienced front-runner has very much found a route to the heart of adoring Reds through her consistent ability to score important goals.

Nine of her 11 United strikes have come after she has been introduced from the bench, and four of those efforts have either been a match-winner or an equaliser after the 86th minute.

It has earned Williams the ‘super-sub’ nickname from supporters, along with comparisons to United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (who, of course, developed a habit of similar ilk during his Old Trafford career), as she tells us in a brand-new episode of TeamViewer Diaries, which you can enjoy below.
Sitting down in the diary room, the 35-year-old gave us her take on those references, as she shared an insight into what it takes to put a marker down after being introduced as a substitute.

“Soon as I know I could be coming on, I’ve probably already done my prep work before the game,” our no.28 begins.

“Like we get given analysis, training, know your enemy – the goalies, the defenders – and I just come on the pitch with not a care in the world other than scoring a goal, creating a goal or we finish that game the best way we possibly can.

“Because I just have every intention to just give everything for the team when I cross that white line. For me, it doesn’t make a difference whether you start, as long as when you come on, you have an impact.

“For me, last year and this year, that’s paying off. I think I’ve been nicknamed like ‘The Female Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’ as well? I’ll take that! I’ll take super-sub any day!”
Williams’s senior career may have started nearly two decades ago, but the striker is continuing to make her stamp on the game, now producing at the highest level for the Reds.

In her TeamViewer Diaries chat, Rachel discusses the relentless mentality within Marc Skinner’s United side, but also what pushes her on as an individual, to keep raising the bar, year after year.
This season, Williams is already one behind the scoring tally she notched in her debut campaign (six).

“I just keep wanting to prove to myself, so with how well everyone has said I’ve done, you kind of always want to be better than your last year," the forward adds.

“So it’s like: ‘Okay, last year I’ve scored however many goals, had however many starts, delivered this to the team. Now, this year, everyone knows I can do that so what am I going to make better or change, or have up my sleeve this year that teams can’t stop?’

“If I don’t grow and move, everyone will catch me up and then I’ll struggle in games. So I think what keeps me motivated is everyone else chasing me. I just get to do what I love doing and that's playing football.”
