Ralf suggests switch to 4-3-3 formation

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick is looking to stick with the 4-3-3 formation he used during the 2-2 draw with Aston Villa.

The Reds take on Brentford tonight (Wednesday) and could line up with a similar system to the one that helped the team assert control for the majority of the Villa game, until the Midlanders frustratingly scored twice in quick succession to earn a point.

Nemanja Matic started in the deeper midfield slot, with two-goal Bruno Fernandes and Fred operating further forward. Scott McTominay will come into the reckoning for a return after serving his one-game suspension and the boss was answering a question about Jesse Lingard when discussing the formation, although the England international is a doubt with an ankle injury.

“To me, it’s important that we always win the next game we play, and it’s also a question of formation," said Ralf. "Which is the best possible position for players? We have now decided to play in a 4-3-3, like we played against Aston Villa, with one holding six and two eights, with three offensive players, and there are two positions that Jesse can play.

“But we also have some competition on those positions. We have a big squad; maybe a little bit too big of a squad."

The three offensive players in such a system would usually be one centre-forward, with two wider players able to cause problems down the flank but also cut inside to support the striker.

Anthony Elanga performed well on the left at Villa Park, with Mason Greenwood also looking dangerous on the opposite wing. Edinson Cavani led the line again, although Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford could be available for a first visit to the Brentford Community Stadium.

There are also reports France forward Anthony Martial is back in the squad.
