Press conference: Sevilla boss Jose Mendilibar previews second leg

Wednesday 19 April 2023 16:00

Sevilla boss Jose Mendilibar has spoken to the media ahead of his side's Europa League quarter-final second leg against Manchester United on Thursday.

Erik ten Hag's men drew 2-2 with the La Liga outfit last week in M16, after Marcel Sabitzer's first-half brace was cancelled out by two late goals from the Spanish side.

With the tie firmly poised heading into tomorrow's crucial reverse fixture, Sevilla will be buoyed following their recent 2-0 win over Valencia in the league over the weekend.

Mendilibar insisted in his media briefing that his team are firmly focused on themselves executing the task at hand, admitting their plans will not depend on how United could line up.

The Rojiblancos have declared a 21-man squad ahead of our Europa League quarter-final second leg.

"Until they announce the line-up, I'm not going to think about who's going to play or who's not because that would be speculation," he began, speaking to journalists earlier today.

"We also have some injured players, you think they're back and fit but they're always missing something, there are no pre-season games now and our test is the match.

"The team they put out will be very good, it doesn't matter who plays."

It has been confirmed that Marcus Rashford is part of the Reds' travelling squad for the tie - as one of four recent absentees to travel - after missing the first leg and Sunday's victory at Forest as a result of the injury he sustained against Everton earlier this month.

Discussing the red-hot form of our no.10 this season, the Sevilla boss issued high praise for Rashford's endeavours in front of goal so far in 2022/23.

''Rashford is one of the best strikers there is at the moment, but we're not going to adjust our plan depending on whether he plays or not, we're thinking about ourselves and respecting our opponents,'' added the 62-year-old.

''If he plays, it will be because he is fit, but if he doesn't, someone else will play who will be as good as him or almost as good."

Mendilibar went on to discuss his own side's fitness, saying: ''We've had people injured for a long time who are now training.

"But people who have been injured for months can sometimes find it difficult to get back to full speed straight away."

The Sevilla boss declared defender Karim Rekik - who was an unused sub at Old Trafford - fit, but ruled midfielder Joan Jordan out of the second leg.
