Thailand supporters' club marks 10th anniversary

Friday 27 October 2023 16:00

Sunday's match comes during an emotional period for Manchester United, as we come to terms with a world without the immense Sir Bobby Charlton.

But pride will also beam out of Old Trafford this weekend, as we celebrate his rich life and an incomparable legacy.

And among one small group at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ – Sir Bobby’s phrase, of course – there’ll be an extra sliver of pride.

Because on Sunday, we welcome the Manchester United Supporters’ Club of Thailand, here to mark its 10-year anniversary.

United Review to honour Sir Bobby

The new issue of our iconic programme is an in-depth celebration of the great Sir Bobby Charlton.

According to the branch’s leader, Pete Warinsee, our support in the country dates back decades – largely, due to the influence of figures such as Sir Bobby, who have imbued our club with a history like no other.

“Some people say it’s about glory, but we want to be part of history,” he states.

“Something bigger. United is one of the best and most memorable things in the world, which is a huge force. Our database shows we have 1,400 members, and 200 or 300 travel to Manchester to watch a match each year.”
Around 18 or 19 Thai Reds are expected in M16 for the derby-day clash with Manchester City, for what Warinsee views as a big milestone in the supporters' club’s development.

“It’s a remarkable moment for us” he smiles.

“I still remember the summer of 2013... we had less than 100 [members], but it’s growing every year. We are pretty excited about more Thai supporters getting the chance to go to Manchester to watch the match first-hand, because it’s more fun. It’s more memorable than watching on TV.”

Last chance to sign the book of condolence

Fans have until 22:00 BST on Friday to leave a message at Old Trafford, but the online version will remain open.

There are no direct flights from Bangkok (the club’s headquarters), so when they do make it over to England’s North West, Pete and co make sure it’s worthwhile. On this trip, they’ll stay for seven nights, taking in the derby, the Under-21s’ EFL Trophy trip to Salford City on Tuesday, then Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle.

“Every time we go to Manchester, I like to support the youth team, because it’s one of the pillars of the club,” Warinsee enthuses.

We’re sure Sir Bobby would approve of that sentiment, given his legendary ties with our Academy. He knew a fair bit about United’s huge global support too. The upcoming Manchester derby will be dominated by thoughts of the great man, but how wonderful it will be to have the Thai Reds here, as we congratulate them on a decade within the United family.
