What Parris puts goalscoring form down to

Saturday 20 January 2024 11:25

Nikita Parris says settling in and becoming more accustomed to the style of play at Manchester United is why she is enjoying a rich goalscoring output so far in 2023/24.

Parris is currently setting the pace for the Reds in her second season with the club, having reached double figures for the campaign after netting a brace during last weekend’s 5-0 win over Newcastle in the FA Cup.

It means the forward has already been able to better the tally of nine that she racked up in her debut term for Marc Skinner’s side, following her transfer from Arsenal in the summer of 2022.

TeamViewer Diaries: Nikita Parris

TeamViewer Diaries | Nikita Parris speaks about her team-mates and scoring goals, before delivering a message for you...

Speaking as the star of a brand-new TeamViewer Diaries episode, Nikita explains what has been key to her finding the net with such regularity in her sophomore year at United.

“For me, it’s settling in,” she begins.

“Coming to United last year, it was a different style of play, a different way of playing and, as an individual, [I had to] do a lot more.

“As a forward, I guess confidence comes from scoring, so that’s always a plus but ultimately, I think my game’s gone to a new level regardless of scoring. I’m in the right positions, I’m very offensive and always looking to get the upper hand on my opponent.

“And I think that mindset has to be continued not just now, but throughout the time I’m here at Manchester United.”

Nikita references getting into the right positions on the pitch as a positive in her first half of the season and goes on to detail how she had to adjust to the fluidity of the attacking play at United.

Those who lead the line for Marc Skinner’s side – whether it be Parris or her team-mates – can often be seen exchanging spaces in order to make the most out of the chemistry and talent the Reds possess, while looking to keep opponents guessing.

“That’s something I’ve had to get used to at Manchester United. It’s very fluid in the forward lines,” Parris says, in the TeamViewer diary room.

“Ultimately, the forward and attack-minded players are very fluid, and people are filling in positions, rotating. At first, it kind of took me by surprise, so you probably didn’t see me move much last year.

“What Marc really encourages is that individuality and really playing off each other, and I think it’s come to fruition a lot more this season.

“Every game I try and learn more [about my team-mates]. What are their best attributes? What positions would I like to see them in that gives them the best opportunity to showcase their talents? That really helps my game.”
