Champions League: Who do United fans want from Pot One?

Friday 16 June 2023 18:30

Earlier this week, we asked fans which Pot-One club you would most like Manchester United to face in the UEFA Champions League group stage.

With the eight top-seeded teams already decided well ahead of the 2023/24 draw on 31 August, Erik ten Hag's men can face seven of the sides, with current holders and local rivals Manchester City being the only exception as a fellow English club.

Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Benfica, Feyenoord, Napoli, Paris Saint-Germain and Sevilla are all up for grabs, with United placed into Pot Two following our third-placed finish in the Premier League.

After two days of voting on ManUtd.com and the United App, we can now reveal which European side was the most popular option...

Topping the poll with a whopping 39 per cent were Eredivisie champions Feyenoord, who enjoyed a successful 2022/23 campaign under manager Arne Slot.

Having lost just two games in the league all season, amassing an impressive 82 points, the Rotterdam club pipped PSV Eindhoven by seven points to win their first title since 2017.

United last faced Feyenoord back in 2016 and ran out 4-0 victors at Old Trafford in the Europa League, with Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard and a Brad Jones own goal all on the scoresheet.

Second in the poll with 18 per cent were the 2023 Europa League winners Sevilla, who beat Ten Hag's side on their way to last month's final triumph in Budapest.

After drawing 2-2 in our quarter-final first leg at Old Trafford, the Reds lost 3-0 in Spain after Youssef En-Nesyri (2) and Loic Bade found the net to send the hosts through.

Los Rojiblancos went on to beat Jose Mourinho's Roma on penalties to claim an impressive seventh title in Europe's secondary club competition and qualify for next season's Champions League.

Another of our Europa League opponents from last season, Barcelona, finished third in our poll. United knocked them out in the play-off round after finishing second in Group E.

After drawing 2-2 at the Nou Camp in the first leg, the Reds won 2-1 in the second leg at Old Trafford. Antony's wonderful decisive strike later earned him our Goal of the Season award for 2022/23.
