United Academy enter Otten Cup

Manchester United Academy have entered a team into the 2023 Otten Innovation Cup, an Under-19s tournament.

The Reds have participated before, reaching the final in 2016. This year's edition will take place between Friday 18 and Sunday 20 August and will feature several interesting rule changes.

Eight clubs are competing for the trophy, with players born on or after 1 January 2005 eligible to take part, with a maximum of four overaged squad members. However, the average age of all the players in total has to be under 19.

Squad sizes can be up to 22 players for the games, which are comprised of two 25-minute halves. Notably, the match clock is stopped when the ball is out of play.

There are other innovations in the tournament, including a rule whereby players can start dribbling from free-kicks, instead of passing them, while kick-ins and dribble-ins replace throw-ins.

Any player receiving a yellow card is sidelined for five minutes, while anyone sent off for two bookings can be replaced by a substitute after 10 minutes. No replacement is permitted for a straight red card.

A penalty shootout will be used to determine placings if teams are level on both points and goal difference in the group stages.

United are in Group B, alongside Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors (South Korea), FC Copenhagen (Denmark) and PSV Eindhoven (Netherlands).
