Your United Pic: European nights

Friday 28 January 2022 13:30

The Old Trafford forecourt is being revamped, and we want you, the supporters, to help us choose six new iconic images to put on display.

Earlier this week, we asked Reds to vote on photos of Sir Matt Busby, Sir Bobby Charlton and Sir Alex Ferguson, plus some of the best action shots from classic goals scored at the Theatre of Dreams.

Today, our category is European nights at Old Trafford. Our relationship with continental competition has been a long one, encompassing pain (the 1958 Munich Air Disaster) and glory (champions of Europe three times) and, of course, a series of incredible, atmospheric matches at Old Trafford.

We entered the European Cup for the first time way back in 1956, becoming the first English club to take part.

Old Trafford's first match was the 1957 semi-final second leg against Real Madrid – we used Manchester City's Maine Road before that, due to the lack of floodlights at our ground – and we've had many special European nights since then. In fact, we went unbeaten in European home matches from 1956 until 1996, when Fenerbahce became the first continental side to defeat us on our own turf.

The famous old stadium has played a massive part in our successes. We beat Real Madrid 1-0 in 1968 on the way to becoming the first English club to lift the European Cup, and there have been scores of legendary wins since then.
Bryan Robson helped us overturn a 2-0 deficit to Diego Maradona's Barcelona in the 1984 Cup Winners' Cup, and we lifted the European Super Cup here after a 1-0 victory over Red Star Belgrade in 1991.

How about the night we beat Internazionale 2-0 on the way to the Treble in 1999? What about the brutal 7-1 thumping of Roma  in 2007? Or the incredible, rousing OT night against Barcelona in 2008, when Paul Scholes's stunner helped us reach Moscow at the expense of Messi, Xavi, Iniesta and co?

Even this season, we've seen Cristiano Ronaldo twice score late on to secure memorable late wins over Villarreal and Atalanta. Old Trafford and European football go together like love and marriage, like cake and ice cream, like Yorke and Cole.
