Every word from Erik's press conference: Part two

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag fielded further questions from the media, in the second part of his pre-Tottenham media briefing at Carrington.

The Reds return to Premier League action in the capital ton Thursday evening (20:15 BST) and will be bidding to further stake our claim for a top-four finish this season.

Fresh on the back of our recent Emirates FA Cup semi-final success over Brighton & Hove Albion, United have the opportunity to extend our lead in the table over Spurs to nine points.

In the second part of his pre-match press conference earlier on Wednesday, Ten Hag was quizzed on a range of topics including Tottenham's all-time leading goalscorer Harry Kane, Jadon Sancho's character and also our ability to bounce back in high-pressure situations.

You can now read every word from the boss below...

Press conference part two: Spurs v Unitedvideo

Erik, what is it about Harry Kane that makes him such a great striker? What is it that you are most impressed by with him?
''First of all, the number of goals. Also, his key actions to come to goal, key passes as well. He is just a great player and a great personality as well.''

Do you think he would fit in well at Manchester United?
''I am preparing my team for tomorrow for the game against Spurs. He is one of the players we have to face and I do not think about anything else.''

Obviously, there is a huge match tonight at the Etihad, yours is equally as important for what you are trying to achieve but this time next year, would you like to be and is your target to be involved in a game like that? Where it is the title on the line instead of a top-four place?
''Of course, it would be great but, in this moment, we can't dream for that. It's about knowing where Man Utd should belong, but the reality is we are not in that place. As a club, we have to work very hard to get back in that position so don't dream in this moment, be in the reality and make a good plan and strategy. Work very hard and be ready for every game.''

You must feel though that you are on the right path to being in that position?
''I think we are in a good direction, but we still have a way to go. That's also the truth.''

Erik, with you being out of the Europa League now the Champions League is only now available through one route and that's the top four. Obviously, with Spurs and Villa now coming up behind you, and you play them on Sunday, can you afford any slip ups now between now and the end of the season in the league? If you want to get in the top four?
''I don't look that far. It's about going game-to-game and we have to win every game, so tomorrow is a great opportunity and we must make sure we are ready for the game to get a result and to get a win there.''

But do you feel there is less margin for error now? With Tottenham and Villa coming up behind you?
''As I have said before, the points are more expensive in this period of the season. We must make sure you are really ready, it is a final and we play in finals. We must show know for the second time that we know how to approach these finals. Do it and do it as a team, be ready as individuals.''

You have already won one cup and have now reached another cup final. From what David said there, how do you compare the two cup competitions, with the importance of the top four and finishing in the top four in these next two games?
''It's around eight games, but we must go from game-to-game. So we don't ever think about cups in this moment because that's too far ahead. We must think about the game tomorrow and that's what we have to do and that is what I demand from my players. This is what we have to do.''

Bruno Fernandes injury update

But in terms of the importance of your targets for the season, how do you compare the top four to the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup?
''Both are important because we are a club who wants to win everything. So everything is important.''

Hi Erik, you quite rightly praised your team for bouncing back after a bad result but you were concerned about in a game not being able to do that? Why have they not been able to do it, is it a sort of panic that sets in because you have players like Casemiro and I know Bruno [Fernandes] was suspended but you have other big players playing, [David] De Gea, I could through them all. Why is that it almost looks like a panic that sets in within games, is that a fair characterisation?
''In some games, it was the case. But in many other games, we were composed and we managed the game and we won the game.''

Okay but what you are concerned about as the manager is in the games where it doesn't work? Have you got a reason? Do you need more bigger personalities or is it more of a long-term thing you need to build them up to deal with certain situations?
''Definitely. But it is just be composed and just be calm, carry on and play your game. Stick to the plan, stick together and it's about issues like this. I think we need some leaders, yeah, in such moments, who know how to deal and are ready that they have already proved it here, but also in other clubs, how to deal with it. In must not have as big of a problem in this moment. In some games, in certain occasions but I also have to emphasise in other situations where we dealt with it.''

Erik to get to that next level where you are challenging for the title, how important is it that you have an elite no. 9 who can do all facets of the game?
''I think we need and we have to strengthen the team. So in more positions too and, for example, for the squad depth. But we don't think about this in this moment and we don't think about this. It's only about, so far, I think we have are having great season so keep going, keep improving, keep progressing. The team is doing so well and then it is enjoyable to be a part in this team. So we have to keep that process going. We have great players, a good team, a great year, but is only a success if you keep going.''

Hi Erik, I imagine it has been quite a tough season for Jadon Sancho but, on Sunday, he showed quite a lot of courage to put his hand up and take a penalty and it ended up being quite a big moment, given what has happened to him in the past. Do moments like that change seasons for players? Do you see that moment triggering something in him to make him the player we all saw at Borussia Dortmund possibly?
''Yes, but I think also we have seen in the season many times very good performances from Jadon. I think definitely, that moment on Sunday, it will strengthen him even more and give him, as you say, more courage and more belief. Definitely and I think you have to recognise it and reward it for stepping up on Sunday and it was such a good penalty. It was so convincing and the same you can say for Rashy [Marcus Rashford], it was so convincing. I think they have stepped over the trauma and that's very good because they have shown they have character and personality. That can help us as, many times, you ask questions about bouncing back in a game, this is the same in a game, show the personality when things are not going in your direction. Make sure you turn it around.''
