Preview: United Women v Newcastle

Manchester United Women return to action this weekend, as we enter the 2023/24 Adobe Women’s FA Cup at Leigh Sports Village.

WHAT IS THE TEAM NEWS?

United's long-term absentees Gabby George, Emma Watson and Jess Simpson remain unavailable for selection due to their knee injuries. Aoife Mannion, meanwhile, has returned to training on grass as she steps up her return. 

Hinata Miyazawa will also miss the match, after fracturing a foot while on international duty with Japan in early December. However, her fellow midfielder Irene Guerrero made her return from injury in our mid-season friendly victory over PSV Eindhoven in Malta, and is therefore in contention to be involved. 

Newcastle, meanwhile, are set to be without first-team trio Jodie Bartle, Keira Skelton, and Becky Ferguson, with the latter sustaining an injury at the end of 2023. 

THE OPPOSITION 

Newcastle United became a full-time professional side prior to the 2023/24 campaign, and have not looked back since. The north-east club are storming the FA Premier Division North, with 10 wins and one draw in their 11 league outings, sitting five points clear at the top ahead of the restart.

They come into Sunday’s game in high-flying form, on the back of 10 consecutive victories. Becky Langley’s side put five past FA Cup third round opponents Stoke City in early December, before sticking 11 past Fylde and seven past Halifax either side of the new year.
