Thursday 18 May 2023 17:30

Manchester United Women's final home game of the 2022/23 season brings our local rivals Manchester City to Leigh Sports Village on Sunday evening (18:45 BST kick-off).

It's also our penultimate fixture of the season, as Marc Skinner’s Reds continue to chase the Women’s Super League title, with reigning champions Chelsea now at the summit.

We’ll be going all out to secure three points in the derby and tee up one last push against Liverpool on the final weekend.

Ahead of Sunday's game, here are the key things to know from live broadcast details to team news…

WHAT’S THE TEAM NEWS?

The Reds are expected to go into Sunday’s game with all but one of our players available, with Maria Thorisdottir ruled out for the remainder of the season. Her fellow Norwegian, Lisa Naalsund, made her return to the matchday squad following a return from injury against Tottenham Hotspur last time out in the WSL, as well as being named in the squad for the FA Cup final, but is still awaiting her first minutes on the pitch since her debut against Lewes.

The visitors will be without both Sandy McIver and Laia Aleixandri who were both ruled out for the rest of the campaign back in April. Australian defender Alanna Kennedy, who recently extended her contract with the Blues, will also miss their remaining two games after picking up an injury.

FORM GUIDE

The Reds go into Sunday’s game looking to bounce back from last weekend’s narrow defeat to Chelsea, in the FA Cup final at Wembley. Sam Kerr’s solitary strike was the difference maker, as it has been many times before, to prevent Skinner’s players a first major trophy. In the WSL, though, our form has been formidable – especially at home. We’re unbeaten in the league since the beginning of March, winning five in a row including a key 1-0 victory over Arsenal, and an exhilarating 3-2 win away to Aston Villa.

Sunday’s visitors are looking to get back to winning ways themselves, having been beaten by Liverpool in their last league clash. City have won three of their last five, but their most recent loss – a defeat to Arsenal at the start of April – derailed their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League. That said, imaximum points in their final two fixtures could enable them to snatch a top-three spot, despite their inferior goal difference, if other results elsewhere in the league go their way.

WHAT HAPPENED LAST TIME WE MET?

Our last meeting with the neighbours was held at the Etihad Stadium back in December. Leah Galton opened the scoring in the first half after some excellent combination play down the left with Ella Toone, but Laura Coombs’s second-half strike levelled things up for the Blues and the points were shared.

In 11 meetings so far in all competitions, the Reds have registered just two wins over City, losing five and drawing four. With no room for error in the title race, Skinner’s players will be looking to make it three wins over the Blues as we chase domestic glory.
