This week at United: 18 to 24 September

Monday 18 September 2023 07:00

Manchester United will be looking to bounce back in midweek when our UEFA Champions League campaign begins.

On Wednesday (20 September), Erik ten Hag's men will begin our European schedule in Germany, where we will face Bayern Munich in Group A of the competition.

A few days later, we will have the chance to get back to winning ways in the Premier League with another trip, this time to Burnley.

With those games and much more awaiting the club over the next week, here are the key fixtures, events and anniversaries for fans to look out for…

Episode two in our new 'One Love' series will tell the story of the Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation...

We’ll begin the week by previewing our trip to Bayern Munich, as well as bringing you a brand new film in the MUTV Originals' One Love series. Keep The Red Flag Flying High will tell the story of the Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation, a charity founded in 2017 to ensure the Busby Babes' legacy is preserved for future generations.

Also dropping today is a fresh edition of the UTD Podcast, in which our trio of presenters - Helen Evans, Sam Homewood and ex-Reds defender David May - talk about their favourite episodes so far.

We'll also be wishing a very happy birthday to legendary goalkeeper Alex Stepney, who turns 81. Stepney was between the sticks for the Reds when we became the first English club to win the European Cup.

On Tuesday, our travelling squad for the Bayern game will be revealed, a fresh batch of training images will drop, and Erik ten Hag and one of his players will speak to the media in the pre-match press conference.

There is also plenty to look back on, as we relive Dimitar Berbatov’s hat-trick against Liverpool in 2010, Diogo Dalot’s club debut back in 2018, and Donny van de Beek’s first start and goal for the Reds in 2020.

It's matchday in the UEFA Champions League, and before our senior team take on Bayern Munich in the evening, our Under-18s will face their German counterparts in the Youth League earleir in the day.

We will have exclusive build-up, live radio commentary and post-match reaction from the senior clash on MUTV, and the United App.

Wednesday is also the anniversary of the late, great Dennis Viollet being born in 1933, and our memorable 4-3 victory over Manchester City in 2009.

Squad numbers confirmed for new signings

Find out which numbers United's four deadline-day signings will wear this season.

Reaction to our first UCL encounter of the new season will continue, and the short highlights will be available for you to watch on demand.

Legendary Reds midfielder Paul Scholes made his debut on this day in 1994 and the rest, as they say, is history.

Longer highlights from Wednesday’s game against Bayern - 90 in 20 and the Full 90 - will be posted on our website and app.

Meanwhile, attention will turn to Saturday evening’s clash with Burnley, with Erik ten Hag answering the media’s questions in his pre-match press conference.

We’ll also be looking back five years to the date when Sir Alex Ferguson received a warm welcome on his return to Old Trafford following a health scare.

Hojlund ready for more memorabilia

We sat down with United’s new striker to discuss collectibles ahead of his potential home debut this weekend.

Ten Hag’s matchday Q&A will be released in the morning, ahead of the evening's Premier League game away to Burnley at 20:00 BST which we'll cover with exclusive build-up and reaction, as well as live updates and radio commentary throughout the 90 minutes.

Both of our Academy sides are also set to play, with the Under-21s facing Arsenal at 12:00 BST and the Under-18s taking on Sunderland at 12:30 BST.

Anniversaries will include David Beckham’s debut on this day in 1992, and it's the 59th birthday of former defender / midfielder Clayton Blackmore. Many happy returns to him!
