Summer Series preview: United v Everton

A classic top-flight fixture is going Stateside this August, as Manchester United face Everton on the third and final matchday of the 2025 Premier League Summer Series.

On the back of clashes with West Ham United and Bournemouth earlier in the tournament – and our pre-season opener against Leeds United in Sweden – we'll do battle with another familiar foe, this time in particularly fresh surroundings.

The game, on Sunday 3 August, is set to be our first-ever in the US state of Georgia, as it takes place in the city of Atlanta, at the state-of-the-art Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

You can find out more about the impressive venue as part of this comprehensive match guide, which also features information on how to get tickets and watch the game live on MUTV…

THE OPPOSITION

August’s game will see United come up against our former boss David Moyes again, after the Scotsman’s storybook return to Everton earlier this year.

After 12 years away, Moyes headed back to Merseyside for a second spell with the Blues in January and helped prompt a huge change in fortunes that saw the club comfortably survive relegation.

The Toffees had been just a point above the drop zone at the time of the 62-year-old’s arrival but lost just four of their last 19 games and finished 13th, 23 points clear of the bottom three.

A nine-match unbeaten run that featured a 2-2 draw with United in February was key in raising the points tally and providing further optimism at an exciting time for the club, whose takeover by the American-based Friedkin Group was finalised shortly before Moyes’s appointment.

THEIR SUMMER SO FAR

While 2025/26 will be a first full season for the Friedkin Group and Moyes, it will be the Toffees’ first since changing their ground from Goodison Park to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The new 52,769-seater arena has been constructed by the famous Liverpool Docks – on Bramley-Moore, to be exact – around two miles away from their former home.

Saying goodbye to 'The Grand Old Lady' means it’s been a summer of transition for the Blues off the pitch, which has also involved an evolution of their football leadership structure with four appointments, including recruiting our director of Academy Nick Cox as their new technical director.

In the playing squad, midfielder Carlos Alcaraz has joined permanently after a successful loan spell in the second half of last season, while Abdoulaye Doucoure and ex-Red Ashley Young are among the notable names departing as free agents at the end of June.

ATLANTA DEBUT

America has long been a popular destination with players, staff and fans for our pre-season trips, although this will be the first time we’ve played a game in Atlanta, Georgia.

It means a maiden visit to the ultra-modern Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which first opened in 2017 and can host up to 71,000 supporters.

MLS side Atlanta United and the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons are both tenants of the multi-purpose arena which boasts an incredibly impressive design, featuring a striking red-and-black stadium bowl and a retractable roof that opens and closes via eight “petal” panels.

While August’s game may be our first trip to the city for a game, the Reds have long had a passionate fan base in the area. It’s home to our Atlanta Supporters’ Club who regularly come together to watch matches at the Fado Irish Pub in Midtown Atlanta.

The Mercedes-Benz Stadium is certainly one to take your breath away!

HOW THE SUMMER SERIES WORKS

United’s meeting with Everton will be the third and final outing of our maiden appearance at the Premier League’s Summer Series, a four-team round-robin tournament.

It comprises of three matchdays in total, each in a different US city and featuring two games one after another in the same stadium, with United facing West Ham in New Jersey and Bournemouth on the Chicago leg before this year’s competition arrives in Atlanta.

Like in the regular Premier League season, it’s three points for a win and one for a draw, with no extra-time following contests that finish level after 90 minutes. The team with the most points after the Atlanta round will win the trophy, but if two clubs are tied they’ll be separated on goal difference, then goals scored and finally, if needed, the score of their head-to-head fixture.

While there is the incentive to win the prize, these matches will also serve as important preparation for our Premier League season – and a competition we hope to make a marked improvement on last season in – against three teams we’ll face in the top flight next term.
