Solskjaer gives update on Mata availability

Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata could be in line for a first Reds appearance in over a month, when we take on Real Sociedad.

The Spaniard has been missing in recent weeks, last featuring in January’s 1-0 Emirates FA Cup win over Watford.

Juan has been restricted to 10 games this season, most of them coming in the autumn, when he was named the club’s Player of the Month, for September, after starring in Carabao Cup victories at Luton Town and Brighton & Hove Albion.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed he would be taking the 32-year-old to Turin as part of a 22-man travelling squad, though, and hinted at his involvement against the club from his homeland.

“He’s been away for a little while,” Solskjaer told reporters at his pre-match press conference, conducted via video call from the Aon Training Complex.

“Of course, against West Brom, you’re thinking ‘can we have someone to unlock the door?’

“If we had Juan there, to create that pass… because he has done well in the earlier part of the season, Juan.

“Now he’s back, he’s travelling with us,“ added the manager.

“He’s been bright in training, so if we see Juan on the pitch, he’ll want to prove to his Spanish fans as well what a quality player he is.”

With Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek remaining at home, and Scott McTominay a doubt due to injury, Mata could be line for a reintroduction to the line-up at the ground where he scored a memorable free-kick in November 2018.

Youngsters Amad and Shola Shoretire have also been included in the travelling party and could be in line for debuts.
