Simpson was part of United’s Under-21 WSL Academy League and Cup-winning side in 2022 before making the step up to the first team. After regularly impressing in training sessions and making her first appearance in a 10-0 friendly win over Birkirkara FC in Malta, Jess signed her first professional contract with the club in January 2023. Speaking at the time, Simpson said: “I’m super excited to sign professional at this wonderful football club. It’s so special. “It’s been such a good journey here, starting from 11 years old with the Academy. It’s been my dream since being a little kid to play for Manchester United, and I’m living that dream now.” The defender sealed a season-long loan deal for the 2023/24 campaign with Bristol City and made her Robins debut against Leicester City on the opening weekend of the WSL season but returned to United after sustaining an ACL injury in the second appearance of her spell. After completing her rehabilitation, our no.38 made her comeback to first-team competitive action during the following season, making her United debut as a second-half substitute in a League Cup victory away to Everton. Having ticked off that milestone and been named in Marc Skinner’s matchday squad on eight occasions during the first half of term, Simpson continued her development by returning to Bristol City on loan for the remainder of 2024/25.
