Your guide to September's internationals

Since concluding the opening block of Premier League fixtures with a win on Saturday, several members of Ruben Amorim’s squad have been joining up with their national teams.

Qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are on the agenda for the Reds that have been selected in senior sides, while our slate of picked players also involves a number that are poised to feature in a series of youth fixtures.

Defender Matthijs de Ligt has been called up by a Netherlands group hoping to maintain their 100 per cent record in the World Cup qualifying campaign to date, as they take on Poland and Lithuania, having won their opening two matches, scoring 10 goals and conceding zero.

Our other European representatives, meanwhile, will be hoping to help their respective nations kick off pursuits of a place at next summer’s tournament in similarly positive fashion.

United transfer ins and outs: Summer 2025

A Denmark squad including Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu and Rasmus Hojlund, who has joined Napoli on loan,  gets going with games against Scotland and Greece, while Altay Bayindir’s Turkey travel to Georgia before hosting Spain.

It will be an emotional camp for Portugal, their first since the tragic passing of forward Diogo Jota. They have picked regulars Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes for encounters away to Armenia and Hungary.

At the same time, Benjamin Sesko will be hoping to make an impact for Slovenia, on the back of his first United matches since transferring from RB Leipzig last month. They play Sweden and Switzerland.

The African section of qualifying is already well under way meanwhile, and Ivory Coast are among the front-runners to be representing the continent at the upcoming global competition.

They top Group F with 16 points from five games, and Amad is in their ranks as they look to take a step closer to sealing that spot against Burundi and Gabon this month.

Elsewhere, Andre Onana and Bryan Mbeumo could turn out for Cameroon, who are second in Group D but just a point behind Cape Verde, who occupy their group’s one automatic qualifying spot.

The top two are due to meet each other in a big clash, after Cameroon host Eswatini in the first of their two fixtures.

Noussair Mazraoui was excluded in Morocco's plans by coach Walid Regragui, as he has only just returned from injury.

Mbeumo wins Man of the Match

While the business end of the campaign approaches in Africa, it has arrived in South America, where each nation will play their final two qualifiers of the continent’s main stage this month.

That includes Manuel Ugarte’s Uruguay, who need a point from their meetings with Peru and Chile to secure progression to the World Cup.

Brazil, meanwhile, have already booked their ticket to the finals but will be looking to continue building momentum under recently appointed boss Carlo Ancelotti during the upcoming camp.

Casemiro and Matheus Cunha were on Ancelotti’s roster for duels with Chile and Bolivia, although it was named before Saturday’s 3-2 win with Burnley, a game that the latter was forced off in with an injury. Our summer signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers was subsequently withdrawn from the squad.

Amorim's update on Cunha and Mount

As far as the youth internationals go for members of Amorim's first-team squad, Leny Yoro is in the France Under-21s group for a UEFA Euro U21 qualifying opener against Luxembourg and a friendly with Serbia.

Ayden Heaven has earned an England Under-20 call-up, as they prepare to tackle Italy at Chesterfield.

Chido Obi could also be in Euro U21 action for Denmark when they visit Wales, after hosting Norway in a friendly.

Meanwhile, at Under-19 level, Harry Amass has been chosen for England, who are set to face Ukraine, Spain and the Netherlands across a trio of friendly fixtures at the Pinatar Arena in Murica.

The full-back made a loan move late on deadline day, to Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship.

One of our Under-21s, James Scanlon, continues to represent Gibraltar at senior level, with home fixtures against Albania and Faroe Islands on the horizon.
